Couple accused in bingo marker fight
SPRINGFIELD, Ill., Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Police said they arrested a Springfield, Ill., couple after they allegedly attacked one another with a bingo marker.
Investigators said Chyrl Miller, 22, arrived home after playing bingo at about 10:20 p.m. Monday to find the front door locked with two deadbolts, the Springfield State Journal-Register reported Friday.
Miller was only able to open one of the deadbolts and began kicking the door and shouting for Jerry Pitts, 23, who was sitting on the couch inside, to come and let her in, police said.
Pitts told officers he asked Miller why she was kicking the door, prompting her to hit him with her purse and throw a bingo marker at him. The man said he picked up the bingo marker and threw it back at her before she fled to a neighbor's house to call police.
Miller gave police a similar account, but told officers Pitts was the first to throw the bingo marker when her back was turned. She said she incurred a small welt on her shoulder from the marker and police said Pitts had minor redness on his arm when they arrived at the scene.
Police said the suspects were arrested on suspicion of battering each other and were taken to the Sangamon County Jail.

Families laughed together
Family bingo night at the Corral de Tierra Country Club attracts a crowd.
The only noises heard from the far end of Corral de Tierra Country Club the evening of Feb. 19 were soft murmurs of "yessss" or "awwww, nope," the rolling of plastic balls inside the spinning cage, and people munching on salty popcorn and nuts. It was family bingo night again at the club.
The event attracted more than 30 people, of all ages ranging from those who recently learned their numbers, to those who helped teach them those digits. Married couples enjoyed the game with glasses of wine, while families laughed together, sipping on lemonade.
Madison Chapman was the first winner of the night on the large X game, covering her card with two diagonal lines forming a X. She was awarded a grab bag of items, including a pencil, bubbles, and candy.

Charity bingo nights canceled
24 February 2009
A SERIES of bingo nights to raise funds for a Broadland village have been cancelled after a resident wrongly called into question the legality of the meetings.
Over the last year about £800 has been raised for good causes in Catfield from the bingo nights in the village hall.
But the nights have been cancelled for the foreseeable future after a complaint was received claiming that allowing people to bring their own drinks and receive cash prizes breached North Norfolk District Council licensing rules.
Even though the council says the bingo nights are perfectly legitimate, the erroneous complaint has caused the organiser to stop running the nights because she feels upset that despite her good intentions someone has complained about them. Mandy Hubbard said she felt hurt over the accusations of unlicensed activities and was unsure if anyone else would take over running the nights.
Up to 30 people have attended the bingo nights, with money raised going towards the village school, WI and Kittens pre-school group.

Electronic health records systems now
Hospitals and physicians should begin planning the rollout of electronic health records systems now to gain maximum financial incentives under the federal economic stimulus package. That’s the advice of H. Stephen Lieber, president and CEO of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, Chicago.
In a Web seminar Feb. 18, Lieber acknowledged that many of the details of the package, signed into law by President Obama Feb. 17, still need to be worked out. That includes the complete definition of a “meaningful electronic health record” that qualifies hospitals and physicians for a total of $17.2 billion worth of incentive payments from Medicare and Medicaid over a five-year period. Nevertheless, he said providers and software vendors can’t afford to wait for all the details to be ironed out before moving forward with automation projects. That’s because to gain the maximum amount of Medicare and Medicaid incentives, providers must have a qualifying records system in place by 2011.

Two Seniors Centers Join for bingo!
There were several new faces — friendly ones, at that — seated at a Conneaut bingo table Monday afternoon.
Members of the Ashtabula and Conneaut senior centers used the Presidents Day holiday to pay a visit to the Inn-Conneaut Health and Rehabilitation Center, visiting with the residents. Forty-five members — 25 from Ashtabula and 20 from Conneaut — arrived in time for lunch and later toured the facility and played a few cards of bingo.
The visit was very therapeutic for the residents, said Suzanne Ales, Inn-Conneaut’s marketing director.

Clean water Videos on Playgirlbingo
Right now 1.1 billion people on the planet don't have access to safe, clean drinking water. That's one in six of us. Many communities in developing nations often have a plentiful supply of clean drinking water just below the ground, but no way to get to it. This is where charity: water and their partner organizations come in. Drilling a well can cost from $4,000 - $12,000 USD and many living on less than $1 a day cannot afford one in their community, even if the money is combined.

Charity bingo exempt from smoking ban
Charity celebrates bingo exemption from smoking ban
The Boys and Girls Club of Killeen is celebrating that local charity bingo halls will be exempt from the proposed smoking ban, regardless of whether or not the ban passes.
It's two statistics that had John Anderson, Director of Enterprises of the Boys and Girls Club, worried if these bingo halls fell under the ban.
* Revenue from charity bingo halls make up over 90% of the Boys and Girls Club.
* 70% of customers at Killeen charity bingo halls are smokers.
According to Anderson, that's a recipe for disaster. "If Killeen passed the ban then the patrons could go just a few minutes and a few miles either east or west. We knew there would be a significant loss of revenue and a significant loss of these charitable contributions."

Smoking Ban Exclusion?
Volunteer fire departments are hurting from the state smoking ban, which has driven players away from the bingo games that raise cash for training firefighters and paying bills, representatives of seven Western Pennsylvania departments said Sunday.
They want all volunteer fire department fundraising activities to be excluded from the smoking ban, which took effect Sept. 11.
