The Poker Players Alliance, a lobbying group that claims more than 1 million members, was formed to convince lawmakers to reconsider the government’s stance.
There have been far bigger issues on the docket for President Obama’s administration while it wrangles with the recession, but every day it puts off this matter is another day a source of federal income is being shrugged off. What makes online poker’s ban more puzzling is that there is very little resistance from the other side. All signs are that legalization would get through Congress with little trouble, and that President Obama would sign it gladly.
Rep. Barney Frank has introduced a bill (H.R. 2267) that would legalize some online gambling, including poker, and Rep. Jim McDermott has introduced a bill (H.R. 2268) that would update the tax code. These bills are two cards that Congress would be wise not to throw into the muck.
