Jack Prelutsky children's poet laureate

Prelutsky was recently was named the first ever children's poet
laureate, by the Chicago-based Poetry Foundation, though childless, perhaps Prelutsky never stopped being a kid himself.

Concerning Bananaconda, Jack Prelutsky noticed the coincidence of syllables, and inspiration struck. His poem begins:

"Oh sleek bananaconda

You longest long long fellow,

How sinuous and sly you are,

How slippery, how yellow."

or his cleverly silly wordplay...

"Imagine if your precious nose

were sandwiched in between your toes,

that clearly would not be a treat,

for you'd be forced to smell your feet..."

Consider one of his most popular poems:

"Homework! Oh Homework!

I hate you! You stink!

I wish I could wash you

away in the sink,

if only a bomb

would explode you to bits.

Homework! Oh, Homework!

You're giving me fits!"

LOL - no wonder he is a favorite of kids!

The Absolutely Worst Places to Live in America by Dave Gilmartin
The “winners” of this awful distinction include the likes of: · Atlantic City, New Jersey Come for the slots. Stay for the gang warfare and fourth-rate prostitutes.· Gary, Indiana Like a sewer populated by 100,000 people. Perfect for folks burned out on the high culture of Reno. · Fairbanks, Alaska Take the most horrible place you’ve ever been, then subtract the sun. · Jacksonville, Florida Possibly the foulest-smelling city in the Western hemisphere. · Camden, New Jersey Once the proud home of America’s first mass murderer, it’s been all downhill since then.

Table Books on Black Book

Elvis at 21: New York to Memphis by Alfred Wertheimer
This stunning volume is devoted to the author's work documenting the early days of Presley's fame. Some of the shots are familiar -- Presley necking with a girl in a hotel corridor -- but there are lots of unfamiliar poses of Presley.

Gucci by Gucci by Sarah Mower
This marks the 85th anniversary of the fabled design house. The book is a luxurious, massive grab bag of old fashion ads, runway shots and gorgeous men and women in various stages of dress and undress. It includes last year's Oscars, with George Clooney in his Gucci tux.

Edie: Girl on Fire by David Weisman and Melissa Painter
This fascinating volume documents the short life of Edie Sedgwick, Andy Warhol ''It'' girl. She was beautiful and surprisingly intelligent, and if the accompanying CD audio interview is any indication, she was also usually stoned.

The Art of Bond: From Storyboard to Screen: The Creative Process Behind the James Bond Phenomenon by Laurent Bouzereau
This evocative collection of nostalgic art from the James Bond films is accompanied by fascinating interviews with the actors and crew -- except Sean Connery, who can really hold a grudge -- from Dr. No to the new Casino Royale, all expertly compiled.

The Jazz Image: Masters of Jazz Photography by Lee Tanner/Nat Hentoff
This black and white visual anthology chronicles musicians, from Satchmo to Bill Evans and Miles Davis, with an emphasis on the 1950s-1970s. Photographers include William Claxton, Gjon Mili and Dennis Stock. You can practically taste the cigarette smoke.

Men held over armed bingo robbery

Police hunting a masked gang armed with swords who robbed a bingo hall in Leeds
have arrested two men.

Three men threatened staff at Mecca Bingo in Balm Road, Hunslet, on Sunday evening
before taking an unknown amount of cash.

About 300 players were in the building at the time. No one was injured.

The men, aged 23 and 30, are being questioned. A car thought to have been used in
the robbery has been seized from the Belle Isle area of the city.

A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said the arrests resulted from calls received
from members of the public after an appeal and the release of CCTV images of the
robbery on Monday.

"Bingo" on stage

"Bingo" is a dinner theater play; it is the story of three hardcore bingo enthusiasts, Vern, Patsy and Honey, who brave a hurricane to get to the most important bingo night of the year. There they meet Alison, daughter of a long-estranged friend on a mission to reunite her dying mother with her long-lost bingo buddies.

Take a moment to try to visualize a stage full of brightly dressed, enthusiastic women singing a song about how "anyone can play bingo/bingo/bingo" and, furthermore, "anyone can win," and you may begin to approach a faint idea what to expect.

In addition, there's a heavy emphasis on audience participation in this show. If you go, be prepared. You'll not only get to participate in a few bingo games yourself, but you may even be accosted by an irate Vern, who takes her bingo very seriously. In fact, Vern came out into the audience and tore a door prize from a woman's hand that "Bingo" begging her to be reasonable.

Two cousins keeping up a bingo tradition

The ladies dropped their bingo dimes in a plastic cup and smiled at Sam's grandsons as they got ready to call the numbers for the Tuesday night game at Park Avenue Seniors Apartments in Burbank.

"We're all in love with those boys," Dorothy Dunn said as the other ladies nodded in agreement. "If we were younger, we'd be chasing them, that's for sure."

Anne Pisano looked up from her bingo card and smiled. Those boys, her grandsons - Mike Pisano, 24, and John Brillantes, 23. Her late husband, Sam, would have loved this scene, she thought. Loved what his grandsons were doing in his memory. whole article
