Poker Bots?

Are poker ‘bots’ raking online pots?

...the proliferation of poker sites presents an excellent opportunity for anyone with a bot that can eke out a slim profit to fly under the radar of those looking for unusual playing patterns.

“If you’ve got a bot that can play 25 casinos, two tables apiece, even if you’re playing a (mid-level) $10/$20 game … that’s $1,000 an hour,” he said.

And if such a bot is created, how long will its author be able to keep it secret?

“It’s only a matter of time before a talented poker player who also happens to be a good developer decides she or he wants to be remembered as the author of the first bot that changed online poker forever,” an author who goes by the screen name “loic” lamented recently in the Twoplustwo.com poker forum.

But Billings, creator of Vex Bot, expects online poker to continue to thrive in spite of efforts to develop the “killer bot.” In fact, he added, it may grow even faster.

“I don’t foresee a danger of bots killing the game in any sense,” he said. “More likely, there will be a large contribution of cash from people who try to create bots and fail.”

Trumps casinos are doing well

Donald Trumps casinos are doing well after filing for bankruptcy last year. "According to the AP, Trump's casino company is now aggressively trying to regain lost ground."

"And most crucially, the greenbacks are rolling back in. Trump Entertainment has earned $3.2 million in its first full quarter since the Chapter 11 revamp. Perhaps not a major advance by casino industry standards, but a sign that for the billionaire real estate magnate with a reputation to keep, that things are looking up."

Bingo Scores High in Popularity

The statistics published on the International Day of Older Persons had the aim of extending recognition to the contributions of senior citizens to world development and to highlight the ageing of world population, which is considered to be the most salient demographic phenomena of our times.

The statistics also indicate that an encouraging number of older persons remain active in various sectors of life. They gave an insight on how the elderly preferred to spend their leisure time. Book reading and eating in restaurants proved to be the favourites, with gardening, sewing or knitting, and playing bingo also scoring high in popularity.

The impacts of an ageing population include, amongst other things, effects on the pension schemes, healthcare, and public expenditure systems.

Pill to help gambling addicts being tested

N.M. doctor tests pill that may help gambling addicts

Bad brain wiring. When something gets skewed in the brain's pleasure pathways, an ordinary person can turn into a compulsive drinker, drug-user or gambler.

The patterns in all three appear to be the same, and the cure might be as simple as a pill and some therapy, said Sandra Lapham, a doctor at the Behavioral Health Research Center of the Southwest in Albuquerque.

"The brain works in such a way that we get in these ruts in our neuro-chemical pathways, and that makes us fall into patterns of behavior," Lapham said. "For some people, if you take away that underlying craving, change that pathway, then you take away the enjoyment of that behavior and can stop it."

Lapham this month is starting a clinical trial to treat compulsive gambling with a pill that blocks the brain's pleasure pathways and keeps the person from enjoying a gambling high. The name of the pill is confidential as part of the study, she said.

The pill has worked successfully treating alcoholics but has never been tried on compulsive gamblers before, she added.

"Gambling is definitely an addiction, it tends to have a genetic predisposition," Lapham said. "It also has very similar symptoms to many drug and alcohol addictions. Up until now, there haven't been any medications for gambling addictions. It's all been psycho-social therapies. This is an exciting time to be in the addiction field."

If a pill to stop gambling seems odd, consider this: A drug called Martex, used to treat Parkinson's disease, has actually created compulsive gambling problems in patients that never had them before, said Kandace Blanchard, executive director of the New Mexico branch of the National Council on Problem Gambling.

"It's strange, but when they take people off the drug, they stop gambling," she said. "If they get to the bottom of that, they'd really be getting to the bottom of a lot of addiction problems."

The symptom list for gambling addiction is similar to that of those for alcohol and drugs.

How often do young men gamble?

According to a survey 9 in 10 young men gamble in some form or another.

According to Life Style Extra a survey shows that 9 in 10 young men gamble and %38 at least once a week.

"The survey of 1,100 men and women aged between 18 and 35 found we are becoming a nation of gamblers. Scottish men are the biggest punters with 48% placing a bet at least once a week and spending on average up to £40 a month."

"The biggest motivator for men to gamble is to make a game and event more interesting to watch (30%). But almost as many said they gambled because they are convinced they will make a big win one day (28%)."

"The amount of money bet has risen sharply in recent years largely because of the rise in online gambling. Just ten years ago the UK was spending £1.4m on online betting, a stark contrast to the £6.4m that is being spent now. Four million are gambling each month online, and since 2003 the amount of money bet on line has risen by 566%!"

Casinos and Radio Frequency Identification

Casinos set to go high-tech frequency identification Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has been part of our everyday lives for well over a decade, including the ID microchip tags that veterinarians surgically implant in pets. But only recently has it been rendered practical and affordable enough for implanting in gaming chips.

The deployment of technology that will revolutionize the way casinos rate individual play at table games is coming in the not-so-distant future. RFID makes use of wireless technology. Information is recorded when the tag is within the range of a transmitted radio signal.

When someone buys into a game and turns in a player's club card, he or she will be identified by table position. Every single bet the player makes during that session will be recorded by sensors at the table and stored in a data base.

The chips don't look any different from a standard chip, but inside each of them is an embedded microchip. When the chip is placed in the betting circle, a detector plate emits an electromagnetic field that recognizes it and sends the information to the table's computer.

Slot players for many years have enjoyed the luxury of having their play tracked accurately and instantly. In return, the casino rewards them with perks, coupons and cash back based upon number of visits and level of play. full article ~ by Brokopp is a lifelong student of gambling and horse racing

Women find poker is their strongest suit

Women find poker is their strongest suit (As reported by: The Times)

By day JoJo Hastie organises charity events and private functions. At night she is one of a growing band of women who are taking over the male dominated game of poker.

Three years ago the image of poker was of large men chomping on equally large cigars in dark, smoky rooms with bottles of beer and tumblers spread around. But in the past year the number of female players has risen dramatically. More than a third of the tens of millions of online players are now women.

The women are also heading out and playing face to face. At a recent ladies-only tournament in Chelsea, 30 young professional women turned up to play Texas No Limit Hold ‘Em, the most popular poker game.

Ms Hastie, 26, started playing cards a few months ago, taught by her boyfriend, and entered her first mixed-sex tournament a few weeks ago. “It was really good fun. I came third out of 20 people and won £250,” she said.

“A lot of my female friends now play and they come round for dinner, we have a few glasses of wine and then the cards come out. full article

Warning signs of teen gambling

Do you know the warning signs of teen gambling?

National studies show the number of young people gambling on poker and other card games has skyrocketed in recent years, but while poker is a harmless diversion for most teens, experts caution the risks of gambling addiction are being overlooked.

"Most people can drink and they don't become alcoholics. Most people can gamble and they don't become compulsive gamblers," says Dr. Lori Rugle, a clinical psychologist and president of the Ohio Council on Problem Gambling. "But for that small percentage, which is comparable to the percentage that develops serious drug problems, (gambling addiction) is a life-threatening disorder."

She says about one-fourth of people in compulsive-gambling treatment programs attempt suicide.

Michael R. Stone, executive director of the Kentucky Council on Problem Gambling, says studies have shown nearly 4 percent of teens are pathological, or compulsive, gamblers. More
