Double tax for bingo clubs

Telegraph

Double tax take could mean number's up for bingo clubs

Britain's leading bingo operators have warned Chancellor Alistair Darling that the Treasury will be out of pocket unless it scraps VAT on products at their clubs.
# The latest news from the retail and leisure sectors

In a letter signed by the industry's most senior executives, the operators warn that the ongoing double-tax regime for bingo risks club closures and a consequent decline in tax take for the Treasury.

"Based on current projections, the net cost of removing VAT at this point is likely to be revenue positive to the Government when compared with the cost of clubs closing," the executives say in the letter signed by eight bingo chiefs, including Rank boss Ian Burke and Gala head Neil Goulden.

Taxing bingo

Times Record

It’s easy to see where things went wrong. The public wanted charitable organizations to be able to raise money through bingo games, but when the state got involved, the broth was spoiled. Now, if you hear from someone with an organization that raises money, er, used to raise money this way, you will hear a sorrowful tale because state taxes are seriously eroding profits.

Oklahoma tribe opening bingo parlor in N.M.

KSWO, Lawton, OK- Wichita Falls, TX: News, Weather, Sports. ABC, 24/7, Telemundo - Oklahoma tribe opening bingo parlor in N.M.: "The Fort Sill Apache tribe in Oklahoma is working to open a high-stakes bingo parlor on a 30-acre site in southwestern New Mexico.

Tribal contractors are putting up eight portable buildings off Interstate 10, 18 miles east of Deming to house the 5,000-square-foot parlor which is scheduled to open this spring.

Tribal Chairman Jeff Houser calls the project a test and says if it doesn't work the trailers will be brought back to Oklahoma.

The tribe would like to open a casino with slot machines but Houser says that depends on the success of the bingo parlor. The tribe also would have to negotiate a gaming compact with New Mexico.

Houser says a high-stakes bingo parlor doesn't require a compact."

The disappointing news from Germany that greeted the online bingo industry at the beginning of 2008 has already produced reactionary moves from the major online gambling companies operating in that country.

Sixteen German states voted at the end of 2007 in favor of maintaining their state-run gambling monopolies which has effectively made it illegal for non-state online gambling companies to operate in Germany.

Observers of the free online bingo industry view this development as a backwards step contrary to European Union moves to establish free markets within the trading bloc.

The number’s up for bingo session

The number’s up for bingo session Print E-mail
IT’S the end of an era for a Northside bingo session which has been running for over 50 years.
The curtains have been drawn for the last time on the regular Wednesday night bingo in St Fergal’s centre in Finglas.
Local Bob Furlong set up the session with friend John Hayden five decades ago but this month they were forced to call ‘time’ instead of ‘house’.
“T’was popular for many years but sure the people get older and eventually die so the numbers get fewer and fewer,” he told Northside People.
“People prefer to go to bigger halls now where there are bigger prizes.
“Back about 50 years ago we used to get about 200 people on the Wednesday nights but recently only about 80 people have been turning up, but you’d need an attendance of about 150 to cover the costs.”
He added: “The bingo has been a big part of the Finglas community.”
