Bingo in the Scrabble World!

It was a mad scramble for Scrabble title
'Pinecone' clinches it

Retired Web developer Ken Clark saw that "axe" was a mistake shortly after laying down the tiles. The veteran competitor in this weekend's "Scrabble in Seattle" tournament realized that playing "ixia" -- a South African iris -- would have won more points and used more of the dreaded vowels cluttering up his rack.

You can't make those mistakes playing against Dave Wiegand, a 30-year-old Portland mortgage underwriter and nationally ranked player who won the tournament yesterday after beating 17 out of 20 opponents.
